General Henry Heth   100
Lee also ordered General Henry Heth's Division, of Hill's Corps, to the Orange
Plank Road - Brock Road intersection (1). Heth's division of 6,700 men, now faced
the 30,000 men comprising Hancock's Corps and Getty's division. Lee called back
Wilcox, from his gap filler role, in order to support Heth and he arrived just in
time to prevent the collapse of Heth's left flank. Only the thickness of the
Wilderness, the confusion of battle, and darkness kept Hill from being overrun.

General Alexander Hays
As the battle for the Orange Plank Road - Brock Road intersection (1) see-sawed
back and forth, General Alexander Hays's brigade joined the Federal troops. Hays
stopped briefly to encourage the 63rd Pennsylvania (15) when he was shot in the
head and died shortly thereafter.
