CAPT. GOODSPEED'S BATTERY A 1861 TO 1865 1ST. OHIO LIGHT ARTILLERY |

Battery A, First Ohio Light Artillery, organized at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio, September 1861. Mustered out at Cleveland, Ohio, July, 1865. At 12,M. Sept. 19th. 1863 this battery advanced in an easterly direction from the southeast corner of this field with the brigade engaging the enemy and going forward more than a mile; was present and took part resisting the night assault led by Gen'l Pat Cleburne, returning to this field at a late hour, bivouacked in the southeast corner for the night, Sept. 20th. At about half past 9 A.M. moved to this postition. At 10 A.M. the enemy advanced in force under Gen'l Breckinridge from the north, endangering the flank and rear of the Army. The battery changed front to face the advancing lines, firing double-shotted canister into their ranks and turning them back when within fifty yards of the guns; remained actively engaged in different parts of the field throughout the day retiring with the army at night.
