Leffert Lefferts Buck was born on February 5, 1837 and grew up in Canton, NY after moving from Bucks Bridge, Morley, NY. His father was Lemuel Buck, a veteran of the War of 1812 and Sheriff of St. Lawrence County in 1832. His Mother was Elizabeth Baldridge.

Leffert was a student at St. Lawrence University with the class of 1863. However, he left the university to join Colonel William Bingham Goodrich's NY 60th Regiment. Col. Goodrich was shot through the heart during the first hours of the Battle of Antietam. Leffert Buck was shot through both theighs during that battle. He was wounded again at the seige of Atlanta. His participation at Lookout Mountain is best described in the following article from the Ogdensburg Advance 1861:
