36TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY, COMPANY C My Great Great Grandfather enlisted 5/7/1862. He was assigned to Company C of the 36th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded 5/9/1864 at Cloyd's Mountain, VA. He was paroled 5/10/1865 (place not stated). Where he was captured is also not listed He was described at enlistment as being 5 feet 6 inches tall with brown eyes and auburn hair. Company C, Nicknamed the CHAPMANVILLE RIFLEMEN, was organized on June 19,1861, for one year enlistment. They were accepted into C.S service July 1,1861. (This company was first a part of the 2nd Kanawha Infantry Regt.) They were consolidated with Company B and Company H to form Company D on May 26, 1862. 8TH VIRGINIA CAVALRY My Great-Grandfather, Charles H. Harler, born in 1831, enlisted in Cabell County, Virginia (now, West Virginia), on April 5, 1861 (?). He was assigned to Company "E", 8th Virginia Cavalry (called the "Border Rangers"). On April 5, 1863 (?), he was captured by the 2nd Virginia Infantry [US] in a skirmish at Mud River, near Huntington, in what is now West Virginia. As a POW he was taken to Charleston, then sent to Military Prison [Athengum Prison] at Wheeling, Va. [W.V.], arriving on 12 April 1863. Prison records: Charles Harler, age 32, 5'7", dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, occupation - farmer, from Cabell Co., Va. [W.V.] On April 13, 1863 he was transferred to Camp Chase [Columbus, Ohio] by order of Captain Perry G. West. On May 13, 1863, he was paroled at Camp Chase and forwarded to City Point, Va. on May 15, 1863 to be exchanged. It is recorded that on May 17, 1863, 1st Lt James P.W. Neil, 18th US infantry, delivered to Cpt J. H. Thompson, CSA, 36 commissioned officers and 164 privates, Confederate prisoners of war, for exchange May 23, 1863. I have very little information regarding his subsequent service but I do know that the 8th Virginia Cavalry saw action in West Virginia, Gettysburg, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and Tennessee.
25TH OHIO INFANTRY My Great Granduncle enlisted on 6/5/1861 as a Private. On 6/5/1861 he mustered into "A" Co. Ohio 25th Infantry. He was 23 years old. He mustered out on 7/16/1864.
54TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY Charles O'Neal, born February, 1831, enlisted September 10, 1861, at Christianburg, Virginia and mustered into "C" Company, Capt. James Craig Taylor's Company, Virginia 54th Infantry. He was listed as wounded in Georgetown, South Carolina (Date unknown), and was a POW on June 19, 1863, at Lenoir Station, Tennessee. He was exchanged June 20, 1863. He resided in Montgomery County, Virginia.
24TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY Thomas A. Whitt, enlisted in Newberry, Virginia, on March 1, 1862, when he was 29 years old. He was assigned to Company "E", 24th Virginia Infantry. He participated in the Seven Days battles, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. He contracted typhoid fever at Fredericksbug and was sent to a Richmond Virginia hospital, 10-31-1862. When he was sufficiently recovered, he was given an honorable discharge and returned home.
4TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY Daniel W. Williams, born on November 12, 1833, mustered in as a Corporal to Company "G", Virginia 4th Infantry, on April 17, 1861. He was listed as a POW at Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864. Confined in Elmira (Hellmira), NY on May 15, 1864, he was exchanged March 10, 1865. He died February 27, 1907 and is buried in Christiansburg, Virginia.
161ST OHIO INFANTRY Joseph L. Miller enlisted on May 2, 1864 as a Private and mustered into Company "A", Virginia 161st Infantry, on May 9, 1864. He was mustered out on September 9, 1864 at Camp Chase, Ohio. He was born in 1840 in Perry Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
4TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY James C. Snider mustered in as a Private to Company "L", Virginia 4th Infantry, on July 16, 1861. The last information on him indicates that he was at the Montgomery Springs, Virginia, Hospital on September 4, 1863.
Ephraim Lashley was born 20 MAY 1827 in Wegee, Belmont Co., Ohio He lost his right arm and left hand by the premature discharge of a cannon which he was firing. He lived at Pekin. Island Creek Twp.(1869) and kept a grocery and owned a small farm. (History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties, Page 595). He died ca 1918.
48TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY He enlisted on 7/2/1861 at Scott County, VA as a Private. His residence was in in Scott County. He was recorded as being a 22 year-old Farmer. On that date he mustered into "E" Co. VA 48th Infantry. He was considered AWOL on 4/30/1862.
48TH VIRGINIA INFANTRY He enlisted on 7/2/1861 at Scott County, VA as a Private. He was recorded as being 20 years old. His residence was not listed. On that date he mustered into "E" Co. VA 48th Infantry. He was listed as: * AWOL 7/13/1861 (place not stated). * Returned 4/30/1862 (place not stated).
61ST OHIO INFANTRY (See Unit description, below.) He enlisted on 2/22/1862 as a Private. His residence was not listed and he was recorded as being 33 years old. On that date he mustered into Co. "H" 61st Ohio Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on 4/24/1862. David served over 3 years in the Civil War, including Gettyburg, and lost an arm at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek outside Atlanta, 7/20/1864. He was discharged for wounds on 4/17/1865.
61ST OHIO INFANTRY (See Unit description, below.) He enlisted on 8/11/1862 as a Private. His residence was not listed and he was recorded as being 19 years old. On 9/6/1862 he mustered into Co. "C" 102nd Ohio Infantry. He was transferred into MS Marine Brigade on 12/20/1862. Date and method of discharge not given.
61ST OHIO INFANTRY (See Unit description, below.) He enlisted on 3/17/1862 as a Wagoner. His residence was not listed and he was recorded as being 25 years old. On that date he mustered into Co. "H" 61st Ohio Infantry. On 3/31/1865 he transferred into Co. "H" 82nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The date and method of his discharge was not given. 61ST OHIO INFANTRY Organized April 23, 1862, under Colonel Newton Schleich, the 61st Ohio Infantry joined Fremont's army in June. The Regiment operated under Pope in Virginia. At this time Colonel Stephen McGroarty took command of the Regiment for the duration of the war. The Regiment participated in the second Bull Run battle; and, in May, 1863, fought four days at Chancellorsville with severe loss. The Regiment took part in the battle of Gettysburg in July, meeting with disaster. In October it was transferred to the Western army, participating in the assault on Mission Ridge. It joined the march to Knoxville and returned to Chattanooga. In the spring of 1864 the 61st Ohio moved with Sherman on his famous Atlanta campaign, fighting the enemy to the end. The Regiment marched to the sea and through the Carolinas, participating in the last battle of the war, at Bentonville. At Goldsboro the 61st was consolidated with the 82nd Ohio, and marched through Richmond to Washington. The men were finally mustered out September 1, 1865.
